The stage is set for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, and all eyes are on cricket stars Virat Kohli and Steve Smith. The first Test begins in Perth on November 22, and both batters are under pressure to deliver as they try to bounce back from recent struggles.
Virat Kohli has had a tough year in Test cricket, averaging just 22.72 in six matches. His poor performance during India’s surprising home series loss to New Zealand has raised doubts about whether he can regain his top form.
Steve Smith, like Kohli, is also looking to prove himself in this five-match series. After a disappointing spell as an opener, the 35-year-old has returned to his familiar No. 4 spot in the batting lineup.
He’s determined to reestablish himself as one of the best in the game, while Kohli, who has a strong record in Australia, aims to dominate on Australian soil once again.
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting believes both Kohli and Smith have what it takes to overcome their recent struggles. Speaking ahead of the Perth Test, Ponting said the duo has enough time to regain their form and make a big impact in this series.
“Smith and Kohli have enough good people around them to get things back on track pretty quickly,” Ponting told the Sydney Morning Herald. “It’ll be interesting to see their mindset this summer. I still think they’ve got plenty of time to find their best.
“It might be Smudge’s time, actually. After that experiment as an opener, he’s back at No. 4, where he’s more comfortable. I’ve said before, I don’t think he should’ve moved up—an opener should’ve been tried instead.”
Ponting also compared Kohli and Smith to England’s Joe Root, who has rediscovered his form in recent years. He believes the Indian and Australian batters can achieve a similar resurgence.
“Joe Root is a great example,” Ponting said. “He’s found a way late in his career to play even better than before. These two are just as talented as Root and, until recently, had better records. Kohli has played well in Australia before and can turn things around this time too.”
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy promises an exciting battle as both cricket legends strive to make their mark.
