Glenn Maxwell recently shared a surprising story about Virat Kohli that initially strained their relationship. Although Maxwell and Kohli are now good friends, thanks to their time together at Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL, their first encounter was a bit rocky.
The Australian all-rounder revealed that Kohli actually blocked him on social media after Maxwell made a playful dig at him in 2017. This incident happened during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy when Australia was touring India.
During the third Test in Ranchi, Kohli injured his shoulder while fielding, forcing him to sit out temporarily. Maxwell, in a light-hearted moment, mimicked Kohli’s posture by holding his own shoulder, but Kohli didn’t find it funny and blocked him on Instagram soon after.
When Maxwell joined RCB years later, he asked Kohli if he had blocked him on Instagram, and Kohli admitted he had.
On the LiSTNR Sport podcast, Maxwell shared: “When I knew I was joining RCB, Virat was the first to welcome me. At training camp, I tried to follow him on social media, but I couldn’t find him. It didn’t cross my mind why until someone mentioned he might have blocked me. I thought, surely not.”
Maxwell added, “I thought maybe he just wasn’t active on Instagram. Then, someone said the block was probably from that Test match when I joked around. So, I asked Virat, and he was like, ‘Yeah, I probably blocked you because you mocked me.’ We laughed it off, and he unblocked me.”
Kohli and Maxwell’s friendship grew strong during their time training together at RCB. They now share a close bond, often exchanging tips and even celebrating milestones like fatherhood around the same time.
