Western Australia experienced a shocking batting collapse losing eight wickets for just one run in their fourth One-Day Cup match against Tasmania at the WACA Ground in Perth.
They went from a solid position of 52/2 to being all out for 53, marking one of the most surprising collapses in recent cricket history. This collapse resulted in the second-lowest team total in the history of the Australian domestic one-day cup.
The Western Australian team looked strong after being sent to bat, reaching 52/2 in the 16th over. However, their middle and lower order fell apart dramatically. They lost eight wickets for only one run, all from a wide ball, in just 28 deliveries.
Six players, including some of Australia’s promising white-ball talents like Josh Inglis, Ashton Turner, Hilton Cartwright, and Ashton Agar, were dismissed without scoring.
Beau Webster led Tasmania’s impressive bowling attack taking career-best figures of 6 for 17. He was supported by Billy Stanlake who finished with 3 for 17. D’Arcy Short was the top scorer for Western Australia with 22 runs, while Cameron Bancroft was the only other player to reach double figures with 14.
Tasmania easily chased down the low target of 54 runs, finishing the job in just 8.3 overs to win by seven wickets. Mitchell Owen top-scored with 29 runs, ensuring a comfortable victory for his team, even though Tasmania lost three wickets in their innings.
Joel Paris (2/10) and Lance Morris (1/10) took wickets for Western Australia, but it was too late after the dramatic batting collapse. Earlier in the tournament, Western Australia had already faced a tough collapse, going from 133/3 to 164 all out while chasing 167 against South Australia in a previous match, which they also lost.
The reigning champions are struggling to defend their title, having lost three of their first four games. Meanwhile Tasmania will be thrilled with this important win in their One-Day Cup campaign, while Western Australia needs to bounce back quickly from this humbling defeat.
