The issue of default of foreign players will be the main topic of discussion in the meeting between the officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the owners of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises on Wednesday evening.
In the upcoming meeting, various franchise managements can be seen expressing concern over the lack of respect and commitment on the part of foreign players in the IPL auction process.
In fact, in a meeting with the BCCI CEO, franchise officials have demanded action against players who withdraw without any valid reason. Some officials have even suggested that such players should be banned.
They said that sudden withdrawal causes serious hindrances to their plans, which are based on detailed plans before the auction.
Reason for absentee of foreign players in IPL
Players like Jason Roy, Alex Hales and Wanindu Hasaranga, who have withdrawn from the IPL in the past, have further increased the concerns of the IPL management.
These players sometimes withdraw due to low bids, while other reasons include personal issues and injuries. Regarding these issues, the franchises have sought corrective measures from the BCCI to ensure player commitment.
England captain Jos Buttler also expressed his displeasure over this and suggested that there should be no bilateral games scheduled during the IPL.
BCCI’s response and corrective measures
The BCCI has raised the issue with the ECB, and concrete steps are likely to be taken to address it in the meeting. The franchises have also highlighted a pattern where some foreign players participate in mini-auctions instead of the mega-auction, which leads to them receiving higher bids. This is also a major issue that will be discussed.
Salary hike and team management issues
In terms of IPL rules and performance-based salary hikes, the franchises want these decisions to be discretionary, not mandatory. They believe that teams should have the autonomy to decide the valuation, not the BCCI.
The meeting will discuss a comprehensive and detailed agenda of the franchise owners, although professionals will not be allowed to attend this meeting.
This meeting could prove to be a turning point for the future of IPL and the commitment of foreign players, and its results could provide important guidelines for the upcoming season.
