Recently Joe Root became the top run-scorer for England in Test cricket. This historic event happened during the first Test against Pakistan at the Multan International Cricket Stadium when Joe Root hit a nice straight drive for four runs.
He finished with 12,473 runs, just one more than Cook’s old record of 12,472 runs. Joe Root also made headlines by breaking the record for the most Test centuries by an English player.
He scored two centuries against Sri Lanka at Lord’s which added to his impressive career. Joe Root is currently fifth on the all-time list of leading run-scorers in Test cricket, though he is still over 800 runs behind Rahul Dravid, who is in fourth place.
Joe Root shared his thoughts on the ongoing discussions about records. “The only reason that it is in my mind is because people keep asking me about it,” he said. “I see myself playing Test cricket for a lot longer. Just enjoy the game.”
While Joe Root is about 3,000 runs away from the world record held by Sachin Tendulkar, Alastair Cook believes he has a good chance of breaking it.
“I see him surpassing the record of Sachin Tendulkar,” Cook told the BBC. He noted that Root’s strong desire to succeed, especially after Ben Stokes took over as captain, has really helped his game. Cook added, “The only slight hurdle in his way will be the Ashes series—there’s always something happening around it.”
He estimates that Root has a 49 percent chance to surpass Tendulkar, who stands at 51 percent, but is confident about Root’s abilities.
