According to the recent reports of ESPNCricinfo, the IPL teams will be allowed to retain 5 players ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. Not only this, but the teams will be allowed one right-to-match card option as well.
The reports also claimed that there will be a major boost for the team in terms of purse for the IPL 2025 auction. Although the exact amount is not known, it is learned that the teams will be allowed a purse between the INR 115-120 crore mark, which will be the highest.
There is no confirmation as of yet for the retention slabs. This means that there is no clarity on how many Indian players can be part of the set of retained players or whether there will be a cap on retained overseas players.
Some media reports previously claimed that teams would be allowed to retain 3 Indian and 2 overseas players. If 5 retentions along with 1 RTM are allowed, it will be the highest number of retentions allowed in the history of the IPL.
Ahead of the 2018 auction, teams were allowed to pick 3 retentions along with two RTM cards. However, prior to the IPL 2022 mega auction, the right-to-match option was discarded, as teams were allowed to retain 4 players.
In the previous auction, the IPL teams were allowed a purse of INR 90 crore, which was 10 crore more than in 2017. This time it is expected to be around 25 crores more than the 2022 edition. Therefore, it is anticipated that the IPL 2025 auction will see massive records getting shattered.
The reports also claimed that the IPL 2025 auction will take place in late November. The event will be held outside India, most likely in Saudi Arabia.
The BCCI had promised IPL franchises that they would release the retention rules by the end of August, but there has been a significant delay in that regard.
The IPL governing council was expected to meet this weekend in Bengaluru ahead of the BCCI’s annual general meeting on Sunday. Therefore, it is expected that they will be releasing the official statement on the retention policy anytime soon with the IPL 2025 auction approaching.
