Prithvi Shaw is currently going through one of the toughest phases of his career. Shaw, who got off to a great start by scoring a century on Test debut six years ago, has now gone unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction. According to cricket experts, the main reason for this is the decline in his fitness and performance.
In his last two seasons with Delhi Capitals, Prithvi played only eight matches in 2023 and 2024 and scored 106 and 198 runs respectively. Despite a hefty price tag of Rs. 7.5 crore, his performance did not live up to the expectations. He scored 1,892 runs in a total of 79 IPL matches at a strike rate of 147.46, but his performance has been disappointing for some time.
At the IPL 2025 auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Shaw had set his base price at ₹75 lakh. But none of the franchises showed interest in buying him. It was a big blow for Shaw.
Prithvi Shaw is currently representing Mumbai Indians in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Against Goa, he created a few chances with his 20-ball 33, but will he be able to impress the selectors with his consistent performances? That’s a big question.
A former BCCI selector recently criticised Shaw, claiming he did not take the advice of greats seriously.
The selector said: “Prithvi has been at Delhi Capitals. It was at Delhi Capitals that he got a chance to interact with Rahul Dravid, who was also his U-19 India coach, Ricky Ponting, Sourav Ganguly.”
“It is an open secret in Mumbai cricket that Tendulkar has also spoken to him. Are these people stupid? Do you see any changes in them? Even if it is visible, it is not clear.”
Questions have always been raised about Prithvi Shaw’s fitness. Recently, he was dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team because of his high body fat percentage. This indicates lack of discipline and lack of focus on fitness.
However, Prithvi Shaw still has time on his hands. His talent is not hidden from anyone, but without fitness and mental discipline, he is losing this talent. So now, Mumbai’s next match is against Maharashtra on Wednesday, November 27. This will be another opportunity for Shaw to prove himself.
