The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has recently made a major reshuffle in the selection committee. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has removed selectors Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from their posts.
The main reason behind this decision is said to be the controversy over the selection of the Pakistan team for the recently held Twenty20 World Cup.
PCB chairman appointed Waqar Younis as advisor
According to PCB sources, Waqar Younus has now been appointed as an advisor to the board.
This decision has been taken in view of his deep understanding and experience of cricket. Waqar Younus will now oversee the cricket affairs of the board and his appointment will be effective from August 1.
Waqar Younus will now report directly to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and address matters that will require his expertise.
Regarding Waqar’s appointment, the PCB has indicated that his services may be regularized going forward. The board plans that Waqar Younus will work like Rob Key of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), who is currently the managing director of the men’s team.
The need for this appointment was felt when the condition of Pakistan cricket became worrisome, especially after the team’s poor performance in the World Cup.
Waqar Younus has been appointed at this time as an advisor who has a deep understanding of the world of cricket and can understand the needs of the cricketers.
The additional tasks given to Waqar include overseeing domestic cricket, high performance centers, coaches and curators. He will also have to play an important role in planning, strategy and game development.
It is also believed that one of the main objectives of his appointment is to free the PCB chairman from the administrative matters of cricket so that he can focus on governance, infrastructure, administration, commercial agreements and the future of cricket.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said,
“We felt that there is a need for an experienced person who understands the language of cricketers and is capable of taking the right decisions. That is why Waqar Younus has been chosen for this important role.”
The next season of Pakistan cricket will start in August and will continue till the Champions Trophy.
After this the team will tour New Zealand. The appointment of Waqar Younus is being considered a positive step at this crucial time.
