Former Sun Risers Hyderabad (SRH) coach Tom Moody discussed the IPL rule change that allows an Indian player who hasn’t played international cricket in five years to be considered uncapped. He also addressed whether this rule was specifically created for the legendary MS Dhoni.
On September 28, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared new guidelines regarding player retention. The BCCI stated that capped Indian players who have not played internationally for five years can be kept as “uncapped” players.
This rule was first introduced in 2008 but was removed in 2021. Now, franchises can retain these capped players as “uncapped” for Rs 4 crore.
If they’re released, they can set a lower starting price at the auction, which improves their chances of being picked. Many fans and analysts believe this change will particularly help Dhoni.
Tom Moody affirmed this rule during an interview with ESPNCricinfo explaining how it helps experienced players continue to participate without overburdening their teams financially.
He acknowledged that Dhoni is a unique case due to his legendary status with the CSK but he insisted that the rule is beneficial for other players as well.
Moody stated, “I think the easiest way to look at this is remove Dhoni as the example, because he is your extreme example. I think it’s a great rule.”
He emphasized that the rule allows talented players to remain relevant and play at a high level without causing financial problems for franchises.
Moody highlighted the value of experienced players like Dhoni for the IPL saying “I think the longer iconic players like Dhoni can play in the IPL and can physically deliver like he has been, it’s good for the tournament.”
MS Dhoni’s last international game was in July 2019. He announced his retirement from international cricket in August 2020, but he still plays for CSK in the IPL, where he has been a key figure since 2008 even leading the team to multiple titles.
