Recently, there has been a big change in Indian cricket, where young spinner Washington Sundar has surprised everyone with his talent. Legendary cricketer Harbhajan Singh has shared his thoughts on the selection of the youngster and his role in the team.
Why did Washington Sundar get a special chance?
Washington Sundar replaced Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia in Perth. This selection was not just a simple change, but a strategic decision.
The coaching staff, led by Gautam Gambhir, considered Sundar as their first choice as an off-break bowler.
The 25-year-old Washington impressed everyone with his performance. In the match, he scored 4 and 29 with the bat, while registering figures of 0/1 and 2/48 with the ball.
But he was selected not just because of his performance but because of his potential. His brilliant performance in the home Test matches against New Zealand caught everyone’s attention.
Harbhajan Singh analysis
Harbhajan Singh expressed his opinion on the change and said that it is a long-term plan of the team management. “Ravichandran Ashwin has done a great job for India, but he is 38 now. The team needs to be prepared for the future.”
Harbhajan clarified that keeping Washington Sundar in the team means preparing him for Ashwin’s place. He believes that when Ashwin retires, Sundar will be able to prepare and take charge of the team.
Apart from this, Harbhajan also praised Jasprit Bumrah. “Bumrah is a fantastic player. His mentality and personality are very calm. He has a lot of respect in the dressing room.”
Harbhajan also shared his thoughts on KL Rahul’s performance. “KL Rahul is a quality player. People criticise him, but if a player is given a chance for a long time, he can prove his ability.”
