The upcoming Indian Premier League mega auction for the 2025 season is set to feature two groups of marquee players. The event will take place on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
As reported by Cricbuzz the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has informed franchises preparing for the auction that there will be two sets of 8-9 marquee players each.
These marquee players will have a base price of INR 2 crores and are expected to be the most sought-after in the auction. While 2022 mega auction had only one set of marquee players – earlier mega auctions in 2018 and 2014 had two sets following a similar format.
Big names like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Jos Buttler, Arshdeep Singh, and Mitchell Starc are among those with the highest base price in this year’s auction. Since these marquee players will be in the first two sets, franchises are likely to spend a significant portion of their budget early on.
The BCCI is expected to release the final list of marquee players and the bidding order soon. A total of 1574 players have registered for the auction, including 1165 Indian and 409 overseas players. Franchises were also asked to submit their recommendations for players they want included in the final auction list by November 12.
If all 10 franchises complete their squads of 25 players – a total of 204 players could be sold, with INR 641 crores to be spent over the two-day event. Punjab Kings, who retained only Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, have the largest budget at INR 110.5 crores and are expected to dominate the bidding process.
This mega auction is a crucial moment for franchises to strengthen their squads. It offers a chance to invest in future stars while securing some of the top players in the game. With significant budgets and big names in play the 2025 IPL auction promises to shape the future of the tournament.
