Indian batter Virat Kohli experienced a sharp drop in rankings after a tough Test series against New Zealand. Following single-digit scores in the Wankhede Stadium defeat, Kohli has slipped eight spots to 22nd in the latest ICC Test batter rankings, marking his first exit from the top 20 since 2014.
There were also shifts in the top 10. Yashasvi Jaiswal fell one place to fourth, while Harry Brook moved up to third. Rishabh Pant, who hit two half-centuries in the Wankhede Test, rose five places to take the sixth spot. New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell climbed eight spots to seventh after his 82-run performance in the third Test.
In addition to Kohli, New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra dropped 10 places to 21st, and Indian captain Rohit Sharma slipped two spots to 26th. On the other hand, Shubman Gill was rewarded for his century in the third Test, moving up four places to 16th.
Joe Root holds the top position with 903 rating points, well ahead of others. New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, who missed the series against India due to a groin injury, remains in second place.
South African opener Tony de Zorzi made significant gains outside the top 20, leaping 32 spots to 38th after a 177-run inning against Bangladesh. Likewise, New Zealand’s Will Young moved up 29 places to 44th after scoring 244 runs in the series, stepping in for Williamson.
There was a minor shuffle in the top 10 bowlers’ rankings. Ravichandran Ashwin slipped one spot to fifth swapping places with Australia’s Pat Cummins. Ravindra Jadeja moved up two spots to sixth.
South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada, who recently reached 300 Test wickets, leads the rankings, followed by Josh Hazlewood and Jasprit Bumrah. Ajaz Patel who took 11 wickets in New Zealand’s series sweep, climbed 12 spots to 22nd. South Africa’s left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj also advanced, gaining four spots to reach 19th.
