The question everyone’s been asking finally has a clear answer now. Is MSD playing IPL 2026 or calling it quits after last season? CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan ended all the speculation recently with his announcement.

Mahender Singh Dhoni is coming back for another season with Chennai. This will be his 17th year wearing the yellow jersey. IPL 2026 marks his 19th season overall in the tournament’s history.
MSD Confirms He’s Available for Next Season
Dhoni is 44 years old now but still wants to play. He told the franchise management he’s available for 2026 completely. CSK fans can breathe easy knowing their legend isn’t retiring yet.
“MS has told us that he will be available for the next season,” Viswanathan said.
“He (Dhoni) is likely to play, that is the (current) status. We have a feeling that he will play in this upcoming IPL.”
Last season was rough for the Chennai Super Kings as a team. They finished at the bottom of the table for the first time. Many thought Mahender Singh Dhoni might hang up his boots after that.
But the champion doesn’t quit when things get tough apparently. He’s ready to bounce back and lead CSK to glory again.
His Incredible Journey with Chennai Super Kings
Dhoni joined CSK way back in 2008 when the IPL started. He’s been their captain from day one, except during suspension years. The team got banned for 2016 and 2017 but came roaring back.
Under his captaincy, CSK won five IPL trophies over the years. They lifted titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023 successfully. The team reached nine finals total, which is just crazy consistency.
Dhoni shares the record with Rohit Sharma as IPL’s most successful captain. Both have won five championships each for their respective franchises.
His IPL Records Keep Growing
Mahender Singh Dhoni has played 278 IPL matches overall till now. That makes him the most capped player in tournament history easily. He’s scored 5,439 runs batting mostly in the middle order.
Is MSD playing IPL 2026 was the biggest question this off-season. Now everyone knows he’s “definitely” coming back for more action. Next year’s IPL gets even more exciting with Dhoni returning to the field.
