England’s star batsman Joe Root has once again made his mark in the world of cricket.
In the second Test at Lord’s against Sri Lanka, Joe Root scored a brilliant century in his innings and made a record of 34 centuries in Test cricket for England.
With this, Root has broken former England captain Alastair Cook’s record of 33 centuries.
Root, who had scored 143 in the first innings, completed his century in the third innings of this match. On Saturday, Root completed a century off 111 balls with 10 fours and set a new record for the most Test centuries for England, surpassing Cook’s record.
Root’s century came in his 145th Test match, while Cook had played 161 Tests in his career.
Root scored his seventh Test century at Lord’s, making him the batsman with the most Test centuries at the venue. Earlier, England’s Graham Gooch and Michael Vaughan had scored six centuries each here.
With this innings, Root also became the fourth batsman to score centuries in both innings of a Test match at Lord’s. He joins West Indies greats George Headley, Graham Gooch and Michael Vaughan in the list.
Root’s century has taken him to joint-sixth position in the list of centuries in Test cricket. Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with 51 centuries. Root is the only active Test cricketer from this group, who has featured in this list so far.
