The preparations for the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have begun in full swing. The BCCI has delayed the announcement of the retention policy, which has surprised all the teams. Because earlier this policy was supposed to come by the end of August, but now it seems that it will have to wait till the end of September.
BCCI delays announcement of IPL retention rules
The BCCI has not yet said when the retention policy will come, all the IPL teams are upset about this delay. They need to know as soon as possible which players they can keep and which will have to leave. The franchise has also asked the BCCI several times, but there has been no concrete answer.
However, according to cricbuzz, it can happen around September 29. The annual general meeting of the BCCI is being held in Bengaluru. A big announcement could be made at that time.
Dhoni’s case could be a major change in the retention policy this time. It is being said that retired international players can be put in the list of uncapped. Chennai Super Kings will be the biggest beneficiary of this.
If that happens, it will be easy to retain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Chennai’s owners have made it clear that if Dhoni wants to play, they will definitely keep him. Even if only two players are allowed to retain.
Along with Dhoni, players like Sunil Narine can also be affected by this new policy. Narine has not played an international match since 2019. If he is also put in the list of uncapped, it will be easy for Kolkata Knight Riders to keep him.
This is a big challenge for the BCCI. They have to make a policy that is fair to all the teams. At the same time, it has to be seen whether new talent will get a chance if retired players are kept in the uncapped.
There is also a Right to Match (RTM) option. That is, if a team does not want to lose its old player, it can buy him back, but the biggest question is how the teams will make their decisions by November 15, when they do not know what the rules of retention will be.
All will become clear in the next few weeks. All eyes are on the BCCI meeting on September 29.
