Understanding the WPL 2026 Retention Rules
Each team could retain up to five players for WPL 2026. They could use direct choice or the Right to Match option. The governing council set specific price slabs for these decisions. Players got paid Rs 3.50 crore, Rs 2.50 crore, Rs 1.75 crore, or less.
Teams needed to follow certain guidelines about capped and uncapped players. They could keep a maximum of three Indian capped players in their Retention List. Two overseas players were also allowed per team’s strategy. The Retention List had to include at least one uncapped player if keeping five.
Money got deducted from each team’s purse based on the number of retained players. Five players meant Rs 9.25 crore went from their total budget. Four retentions cost Rs 8.75 crore while three took away Rs 7.75 crore. Every franchise started with Rs 15 crore for the auction originally.
