Rishabh Pant is done with his captaincy role for Lucknow. Nobody expected this too soon honestly. He told LSG he’s stepping down immediately. The franchise accepted this right away.

LSG this year was an absolute mess. 14 wins out of 14 matches. That’s embarrassing as they finished last place which is the worst. First team to get eliminated from the playoffs. The whole franchise was falling apart. Everybody was blaming Pant apparently.
He took this captaincy job back in 2025. Cost the franchise as the highest-paid player ever in history. But things didn’t work out. Not his fault entirely maybe. But captaincy puts pressure on you. Sometimes players just can’t handle it. That’s probably what happened here.
Last year they won 6 matches and this year only 4. That’s terrible honestly as 28 matches and 10 wins total. You can’t win tournaments with that record. No wonder Rishabh Pant quits.
His Batting Numbers Were Really Bad Too
And it wasn’t just the captaincy failing. Rishabh’s batting was also struggling badly. In 2025 he got 269 runs. In 2026 he made 312 runs only. That’s not enough runs. The average was like 26.4, which is poor.
When he was at the Delhi Capitals, he was scoring. 446 runs in 13 games was quality cricket. Then he joins LSG and everything changes. The runs stopped coming. Maybe the team environment was bad. Or maybe moving stressed him out.
He hit one hundred and 2 fifties. That’s it across both years basically. For a player who cost so much money? That’s disappointing honestly. Pant is usually an aggressive batter. Here, he was just struggling constantly.
Who Gets the Captain Role Now
LSG has to find a new captain quickly. Mitchell Marsh could be an option. He’s led cricket teams before. Aiden Markram also has international captaincy. Nicholas Pooran could work too. All three guys know how to captain.
They’ve captained their national teams. So they understand the pressure. They’ve been in tough situations. Any of them could probably do better. The bar is honestly not that high right now.
Tom Moody said the decision was hard. Makes sense because Pant is still a star. Even if his form dropped. They want to rebuild everything apparently.
What’s Next for Lucknow’s Future
So now LSG has to restart their whole thing. A new captain means a new direction. The team needs better performance next year. Can’t finish last again that’s for sure. Fans must be really upset with everything.
Rishabh Pant will probably join another team. He’s still a talented player really. Just needed out of that LSG situation. Sometimes, captaincy just doesn’t work for a guy. Better to quit than drag it further.
