Kolkata Knight Riders had a really bad IPL 2026 campaign honestly. They won just 6 matches out of 14 games total. Finished 7th on the table which is embarrassing. Three-time champions shouldn’t be finishing that low. The team underperformed badly despite having star players everywhere.

They lost their first 6 matches straight. That’s a terrible way to start any tournament. Later they won some games but it was too little too late. They couldn’t make the playoffs at all. The squad just didn’t click together this season. Something was seriously wrong with the team.
KKR had big names and big expectations. But nothing really worked out the way planned. The campaign was a massive disappointment for fans. The franchise needed to fix things urgently. Big changes are definitely coming in the squad.
- Ajinkya Rahane
Ajinkya Rahane was brought in late as an addition. He batted at the top of the order for KKR. Scored 335 runs total. His strike rate was 135. That’s decent batting honestly but not enough.
But here’s why he might get released. Rahane is 37 years old already. KKR probably wants a younger opening batter. The captain’s situation might change after this disaster. Rahane is getting old for the franchise model. Fresh blood is needed at the top honestly.
The senior batter didn’t do anything terribly wrong. His numbers were actually reasonable in many ways. But for his age and the price, more was expected. KKR wants to move in a different direction.
- Cameron Green
Cameron Green cost KKR 25.20 crore rupees. That’s the record money paid for him in an auction. But the Australian all-rounder flopped badly. He scored 322 runs only. That’s nowhere near justifying his massive price tag.
With the bat he was inconsistent and disappointing. His bowling also didn’t deliver much. He took 7 wickets in 10 matches bowled. His economy rate was expensive constantly. He just couldn’t perform at that level. The investment completely backfired on the team.
Green had everything going for him too. Talented young player with big potential. But IPL cricket requires different skills sometimes. He struggled adjusting to the format. KKR definitely wants to release him after this.
- Vaibhav Arora
Vaibhav Arora was the lead pacer initially. He took 11 wickets throughout the season. But his economy rate was 10.26. That’s way too expensive for a pacer. Runs flowed constantly when he bowled. Eventually they dropped him from playing eleven. He won’t feature in future plans likely.
- Matheesha Pathirana
Matheesha Pathirana was in an even worse situation. He played just one single match. Bowled eight deliveries then got injured. Hamstring injury ended his season completely. Cost 18 crore but played nothing basically. It was a complete waste of money investing in him.
- Ramandeep Singh
Ramandeep Singh got very limited opportunities honestly. Played in just 6 matches for KKR. Scored 32 runs on average. His strike rate was 120. He hit 8 fours and 2 sixes total.
The young player needed more game time. But the team kept rotating the lineup constantly. He never got consistent chances to prove himself. Maybe elsewhere he’ll get better opportunities. KKR will likely let him go.
